Welcome to class! This course is a 3 credit course that teaches you how to create graphics and multimedia content for the Web. Graphic topics include formats, size and resolution, optimization, and design fundamentals. Multimedia topics include animation, interactivity, and combining sound, speech, graphics, photographs and video. You will have the opportunity to familiarize yourself with, and master the processes of creating images, animation, audio and video.

The course is offered through the Community & Technical College (CTC) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). The majority of the material for this course can be found on this site. If you are enrolled through UAF CTC:

  • Your assignments will be turned in through UAF Blackboard. You can log in by going to https://classes.uaf.edu. Your Blackboard user name and password will be the same as what you use to access UA email.
  • I will be communicating with you via your UAF email addresses, so please check your account. If you prefer to use another email address, consider forwarding your UAF email to that account so you don’t miss any class communication.

To get started in this course for the Fall 2014 Semester, please review the course syllabus and schedule linked in the menu above. As an enrolled student, you are required to participate in class and submit homework assignments for feedback to earn a grade and receive credit.

We will use Adobe Creative Cloud tools for this course, specifically Adobe Fireworks to create and edit web graphics and Adobe Flash to create animations. There are many fine graphics editing programs out there and you may use other comparable software if you prefer, but the tutorials and instructions in this class will be based on these two software applications.

During the semester you will be reviewing the work of web design/development professionals to inform your own work. This will give you an opportunity to see how others work and hopefully inspire your own ideas. You will be signing up for an account on the Behance Network to do this, and to share the work you create with other students in the class. Please note that if you already have an Adobe ID, you can use it to log into Behance.

As your instructor, I look forward to working with all of you this semester, hearing your perspectives on web media, and seeing your creations! Do not hesitate to mail me your questions at any time of the day. You can expect to hear back from me within 24 hours, though I will usually respond sooner than that. Please see the syllabus for my office hours and alternative methods of contacting me.
